Last Blog

Through out this class, I think I have learned lots of things. Everything was new and exciting for me. I am a Political Science major, so I had not paid attention so much to advertisement. I really did not know how they are well thought to affect us in our daily life.

One of the best topic I liked was stereotyping. People sterotypes everybody without being noticed by yourself. Sometimes people will not think what they are doing is stereotyping. The class about gender, ethnicity, etc stereotyping made me think more about what I am doing everyday. And I started to think more when I am walking around the city, in the mall, on TVs and so on. I was really interesting when I begin to understand why the ads are made so.

Recent years, social network technology is growing rapidly. Most of people can have access to internet. I think that the strategy of advertising is changing too. More people have facebook, twitter acounts and they are always on them. And even companies have their accounts too. As the tecnology moves forward, advertising is moving forward.

Nostalgia Marketing

Q1:What are some of the major advantages and disadvantages of nostalgia marketing?
A: Nostalgia marketing is a marketing that tries to recall their experiences in the product. It relies on consumers generating positive memories about past experiences. This marketing strategy has both advantages and disadvantages. First, the advantages are the remembering the past evokes positive feelings. And it will make people feel younger with familiar products. Also it can reduce the cost for advertising by using the past ads. On the other hand, the disadvantages are it might recall a negative associations which you don't want to do. And also it might alienate different target groups.

Q2: Are there some products or brands for which this strategy may not be successful? Why not?
A: The nostalgia marketing will not work if they try to bring the new technology combined with nostalgic marketing. Because it feels strange. Why could the newest technology could be in the old good time in the past? It is impossible! So this marketing strategy should be used for something that is very old and make people want to know more about the past good times.

Questions

Q1: Do you believe brand communities like Harley-Davidson result in greater involvement with the brand?
A: Yes, I do. Because people know that the bike from Harley-Davidson is super cool. So, they will think that there might be also a cool stuff from the same brand.

Q2: What elements of the Posse Ride do you believe enhance the meaning of the brand for the riders?
A: Being connected with people who shares the same enthusiasm is a very important thing for customers. They want to exchange their knowledge. And also, the passport which is stamped every time you complete a stage of the ride will give the incentive to get involved to events.

Q3: Should Harley-Davidson get more involved in the ride or would that dilute the rider's meaning to the participants?
A: They should get more involved so that they can keep the customers in their brand.

Q4: In additional to experience such as the Posse Ride, what other ways could Harley increase involvement in the brand?
There could be an invent where you can test ride the new models of Harley-Davidson.

Understand the consumer behavior

Coke from Coca-Cola has been account for more that half in the soft drink market. But in the 1980s there was a trend of non calorie drinks. Although, Coca-Cola was not having a low calorie product. Tab was gaining the profit from the light soft drinks.

Diet coke has succeeded to target the consumers who cares about weights but still want to drink coke. And it made a large profit from selling the diet coke.

Eco-terorrists

The opportunity that I had to know about this association was the lecture I had when I was in high school. We saw the movie "the Cove." I was really shocked at that time. But after I know a little about this assiciation, I statede to think that the movie might be overstated or unture movie. Because their way is always violent.

But people might affected when they don't know about how they are doing. I think there thought to protect animals are good. Although their things that you should not do.
They should protect humans life before trying to save animals.

Stereotype Part. 2: Gender

Some times it is difficult to judge the advertisments' stereotype is good or bad. Especially it is hard to decide the opposite genders' stereotype. Girls might think that the ad was offensive even I thought it was not. We have different view points and criteria of judgement. So it is not ok only because you think ok. You have to think about what the other might feel.

This is the one I thought, it may be the worst sexist ad.

This is totally offensive. In the first they are aggressive. And they says that this soda is for men. Like, manly calories. And at the last it clearly says and writter "It's not for WOMEN." This stereotypes is not making the ad commedy. They are just making women uncomfortable. I do not know why this ad was made. I think no one will like to buy Dr. Pepper after seeing this commercial. This ad is going too much. I think it is not a good thing to say definitively.

Stereotypes

Every advertisements have a meaning. it is well thought what to out on the ad. And to attract the customers stereotypes are used in advertising. Some stereotypes are good to make humor. But there are advertisement that might be discriminative.

This is a ad from NIKE. They are useing a blcak football player. He is fast and strong and a good player. But at the end of commercial he looks like a animal or a creature. This has a strong impact that, black people are kind of like an alien. Like these negative ads should not be on public. That will make a discrimination.

Semiotics

There are hidden messages in ads. They are mostly targeting certain peoples. I would like to take three examples and analyze them.

First one is the outdoor advertisement.
This one shows game controler plus guns will make kids kill people.
I think this advertisement means, the reason of childrens murder is related to game. And you can also get guns easily.

The second one is the TV commercial.

The Denotations are C. Ronald and peoples who are brown away, and the nike product "Mercurial" I think this shows that by wearing this shoes, you can be as fast as a wind.

The last one is the print ad from NIXON.

The denotation is a survival knife, wallet, two rubber band watches, backpack, and I think there is a meter of the airplane.
I think with these products, you can go any where you want to travel or go in to adventures.

Like these three ads, there are hidden messages. From these messages you can know about those products and let us want to buy.

Nike Football

Trough seraching about the ad agencies, I learned that there are so many kinds of agencies are in the world. Maybe most people do not know about there company or their names, but they are doing a great job for the famous products.

The most interesting ad agency for me was the Wieden +Kennedy.
It was founded by Dan Wieden and David Kenndey in 1982. There headquares are in Portland, Oregon. And they have their offices all over the world, New York, London, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Tokyo, Dehli, and even in Sao Paulo. Around 1100 people are working there.

Their famous clients are Nike, Chrysler, Sony, Honda, Coca-cola, P&G, and etc.
I did not know about this company, but I have seen their advertisement so many times.

The one I like the best is from the Nike Football. Not the american footbal, the soccer commercial.
This one was made beffor the World Cup in 2002. So many star players are in this commercial. I love it.

This is also great!!

Nowdays I do not see these commecils. It is very a shame.

Brands in our daily life

In these days there are so many brands in our daily life. Each brands has there own strategy to promote there products. Through the class discussion, I learned that most of the advertising in America is related to the normal families life. This was totally different from the advertising in Japan. We do not have TV commercial like that. Mostly they use famous actors or celebrity for the ad in Japan. Not expalaining what they are, but just make them act something. They make us to have a good image of their products.

This is a Japanese TV commercial which I thought the worst one in Japan.
Face-wash commercial using Messi

It just let Messi to say "feel so good, Messi and Anfar(brand name) is both 25 years old" in Japanese.
I do not know how much they spend to use Messi, but I think it will cost very much.
What I only thought is this TV commerical is a nonsense. It is funny but it will not make me buy this face-wash.

These ad is quite normal in Japan. This is because people in Japan tend to be a star-struck. They want to be like a celebrity, they want to act like a celebrity, they want to be like the West.

This class make me think more about the difference in characterlistic with the American people.

Studying Advertisement

There are many advertisement in our daily life. On the roads, inside of a bus, TV comercials, etc.

Some of those ad will make us excited about new products. But some will not.

I am an exchange student from Japan. So I do not know so much about the ad in US.
But what I thought in Japan was that they were not really advertising their products. They just let the famous actors to use them and make the customers think that those products are good, without explaining the products. People who saw the ad buy them not because those products are good, but because actors they like are useing them.

I want to know how these advertisement are made through this class.
I am not good at using english so please also give me an advise about my language.
